Today was a long ride of 73.5 miles but I have to say the first 35miles or so were absolutely fabulous cycling! Forget Cornwall and Devon, when my knees are shot and I can’t run up/down hills anymore I’m moving to Somerset! From Bridgwater to Yatton, today’s route was flatter than a very flat flat thing!
We barely climbed for more than a couple of minutes for the first few hours and the Strawberry Line cycle path was beautiful, well maintained and most importantly Flat!
We met up with Karen and Michael for lunch at the Kings Head at Easton Gordano - a much nicer option than the Motorway services just ¾ of a mile away! Onwards and we avoided the infamous hills of Bristol with only a few short sharp climbs breaking up a nice rhythm all the way across the Avonmouth and the Severn Bridges.
A slight detour followed around a housing estate in Chepstow - but after that today’s climbing started in earnest. The last 20 miles were all long drags or maybe they just seemed tough in comparison to this morning?
The final 2 miles was a great descent down to Symonds Yat and we were happy to see tonight’s accommodation the lovely Saracens Head Inn - booked as a special treat for Julia as today is her birthday (how else would you want to spend your birthday other than a tour of Somerset, Monmouth, Gloucestershire and Herefordshire?)
Tomorrow’s route see’s us riding even further (77 miles) and climbing throughout the day - now there’s a thought to go to bed on……………
