Day 4: Four Counties and a Birthday.

74 glorious birthday miles. Well 55 and a hard slog at the end.

I love Somerset - FLAT leafy lanes, the strawberry cycle path.

We met Karen and Michael for lunch at Eastern in Guardino - 1 mile from the M5 services yet a different world. We cycled under, sometimes alongside the M5 yet the lanes we quiet and obscured from the motorway. The afternoon saw us travel across the Avonmouth bridge through the urban sprawl of Bristol - yet quiet, free of traffic, people and a real surprise a total absence of broken glass.

Mid-afternoon took us across the Severn bridge ( in a car you never notice that the bridge moves and vibrates under your feet) and into Wales .A quick visit to Monmouthshire and back out into Gloucestershire. There began the hard work - the climb up from Chepstow finally rolling down and into The Scaracens Head at Symmonds Yat in Herefordshire. What a beautiful place to end a birthday in. Thanks Martin.
